About St. Bonaventure University

St. Bonaventure University is a private, Franciscan Catholic university, located in Allegany, which is a town in Cattaraugus County, in the US state of New York, one of the largest towns in New York, by size, having a population estimated at a number of more than 8000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census.

The university was established in 1858, by the Franciscan Brothers, being founded by Utica financier Nicholas Devereux, who founded the town of Allegany, in hope to build a new city. St. Bonaventure’s College, the name by which the university was first known, gained university status in 1950, the university status being granted by the New York State. The largest residence hall on campus, which is Devereux Hall, has been named in honor of the founder.

Today, the university, which has been one of the nation’s most prominent Catholic colleges, has turned into one of New York’s well known educational institutions, offering more than 50 academic programs, as well as new ones, in gerontology, theater arts and art history, having students from 34 states and nearly a dozen other countries.

In athletics, the university is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, sponsoring 14 athletic programs, the men’s basketball program being the most successful, throughout its history, among the basketball team’s most notable achievements being the NCAA Final Four appearance in 1970 and the NIT Championship in 1977. The St. Bonaventure Bonnies, as the athletic teams from the university are known, have experienced victory, in many of their sports, over the years, winning Atlantic 10 Conference titles in sports such as baseball, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving, also competing in Division I sports, including in basketball, golf, lacrosse, softball, tennis and rugby.

Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: Pulitzer Prize winners such as Robert A. Dubill - former executive editor of USA Today; won in 1980 for public service, John Hanchette - former managing editor of Gannett Newspapers; won in 1980, also for public service, and Dan Barry - reporter for The New York Times; who won in 1994, for investigative reporting, as well as other people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, such as Michael Lynch - population geneticist and academic at Indiana University, Thomas P. Ryan, Jr. - Mayor of Rochester, New York (1974-1994), and Catharine Young - New York State Senator.
